Have you ever paused to consider the complex factors that lead these whales to choose Mossel Bay as their seasonal meeting place?

An intricate process of deliberate decision-making supported by compelling reasons underlies the selection of this vacation destination which annual travelers choose to visit.

The Southern Right Whales initiate their yearly migration to Mossel Bay around May when winter commences in the Southern Hemisphere . What intricate set of motivations compel these individuals to journey to this specific location? Mossel Bay stands as a protected refuge where these gentle giants find the conditions necessary to perform mating rituals and deliver their offspring. The shallow waters function as a protective environment where mother dolphins can nurse their calves free from predator threats.

The Southern Right Whales embark upon an exceptional migratory expedition from the frigid Antarctic waters to Mossel Bay where they establish breeding grounds and secure nurturing spaces for their young. When these whales arrive at the relatively shallow waters of Mossel Bay they find a critical protected zone that serves as an essential calving area where mothers can nurse their calves free from predator threats (Betts, 2014). The migratory behavior exhibited by this species meets their reproductive needs while functioning as a vital population maintenance mechanism. Mossel Bay's unique geographical features create an extraordinary environment that supports newborn calves during their critical early development phases (Matthews, n.d.). These majestic creatures identified as these animals undertake an annual journey back to Mossel Bay driven by instinctual behaviors that secure their safety and nutritional needs during a crucial phase of their lifecycle.

The extraordinary event of two white or brindle Southern Right Whale calves appearing in Mossel Bay's waters enhances its appeal by drawing the attention of both scientific researchers and whale watchers. The occurrence of this event represents an extraordinary anomaly because colour variations among Southern Right Whales remain scarce, with most specimens displaying the typical dark grey coloration. These uniquely marked calves function as markers of genetic diversity within their population. The observation of these distinctive calves alongside their mothers as they navigate the protected waters of Mossel Bay during their migratory passage transforms into an even more enchanting spectacle.

The forthcoming whale season presents an exceptional chance to observe these splendid creatures through Mossel Bay Boat Adventures, which operates daily boat-based whale-watching excursions. The guided excursions present an extraordinary opportunity for close-range observation of Southern Right Whales as they migrate to Mossel Bay to perform their breeding and calving activities.

Mossel Bay Boat Adventures utilizes a team of specialized guides who follow ethical wildlife observation methods to ensure visitors can observe these majestic beings while learning about their behavioral patterns and the active conservation programs dedicated to their preservation. Embrace this exceptional chance to participate in a remarkable experience where whales undertake their seasonal journey back to their sanctuary!

Tips on what to do if you fall overboard

Here are some handy water safety tips in the unlikely event that you fall overboard;

Before we walk to the pier for a boat adventure, our crew will help you put a life jacket on. Make sure it fits tightly and fastens correctly. Ask the skipper questions if you are unsure of anything.

Prevention is always the best tip. Make sure you follow the skipper’s instructions to remain seated on the boat, hold on the bars provided and don’t stand up when the boat is in motion. Remember Freaking Fast Wave Rider goes FAST!

If you do fall overboard, remain calm. Don’t panic or thrash about in the water. Your life jacket will keep you afloat.

Our skipper will quickly get you out of the water but you can help by bringing your knees up to your chest and keep your arms crossed, hugging your lifejacket.

If you fall overboard, try to get as much of your body out of the water as possible and try to grab hold of the boat or any other floating object. Try to stay with the boat.

Remember there are many hands on board that will help pull you back onto the boat.

We love the ocean and especially swimming in the sea but on a boat trip, to enjoy the experience and the marine life, it’s best to follow the safety rules. After your boat trip you can join us for a splash in the sea on the #FatBoysBlob where you can get your friends to launch you into the water.

In 2019, the Great White sharks along the Western Cape coastline went into hiding at the appearance of the Orca whales. In the whale season of 2021, we have great expectations of seeing the whales in their splendour in Mossel Bay once again.

Mossel Bay Boat Adventures provides an Eco Whale Safari on our Fearless Speedboat. We usually have a head start as we have good friends in Mossel Bay that inform us of the places where the whales have been spotted. When we approach the general area, we keep a legally required distance and all eyes scan the waters for the first sighting of the whales. In Fearless Speedboat, the skipper quickly gets you to the area where the whales are spotted and will expect everyone on board to help spot the whales as well as other marine life. We want you to spend your time on the boat trip taking photos of the whales and admiring their displays rather than on the journey there and back. On a good day, the Eco Whale Safari in Mossel Bay turns into an entertaining eco marine boat tour as you may also see the Bottlenose Dolphins, the Great White Shark and a host of different sea birds like the Gannet and Oystercatcher. The Eco Whale Safari includes a free trip to Mossel Bay’s Seal Island, home to hundreds of Cape Fur Seals.

The skipper will give you the best opportunities to take photos but we’ll keep a respectable distance without imposing on the whale’s natural movements and space. We’ll also point out a number of good land-based whale watching spots along the Mossel Bay coastline. So, don’t make the mistake of thinking there is nothing to do in a seaside holiday town in winter. Book this ocean adventure with us today because we have spectacular wildlife shows planned for you.

In spite of tourism businesses that were severely restricted and impacted by the fact that

* the Garden Route was declared a Covid Hotspot

* Garden Route beaches were closed for the public

* and all the other Covid related restrictions.

But we still kept on 'keeping on' and in between literally hundreds of Freaking Fast Waverider Speedboat Trips, White Shark Parasailing, Big Tube Rides, Fat Boys Blob jumps and launches, and Seal Island Family Trips we hope we've managed to create some good times and great memories for friends and families that supported us - deciding to end this difficult year in high spirits (without alcohol off course!)

What stood out for us was the crowd participation, enthusiasm, and loud cheers that echoed from Harbor restaurants upon a really good/high Fatboys Blob Jump/Launch! It added a celebratory vibe to our harbor happenings and put a smile on many faces that have seen a tough year! We hope this new addition to our Activities family can become one of the 'must-see/must-do' attractions at the Mossel Bay Harbor.

The closure of beaches also led to more Big Tube Rides for those who just had to go for a dip in the sea. A roller coaster-like spin around the Indian Ocean trumped a quick swim anytime!

We also had a very successful launch of our new website and online booking system. We believe the Mossel Bay Boat Adventures Brand will help put Mossel Bay as a town and the whole Garden Route as an area, on the map as the adventure region/capital of South Africa.

Thank you to each and everyone that supported us this season and a special thanks to all our awesome staff....

Michelle (ticket office), Jade and Terhia (marketing), Franco & JC (Lifesavers/Blob), Dawie and Conre (Skippers Parasailing), Tristan & Alf (Skippers Freaking Fast/Waverider) Simeon, Rama, Marcel, Gurshwan, Jamil, Jaco (Boat Assistants) and Minolly & Chris for the in/out of Boats every day!

Keep watching our Social Media notices for weekly trips throughout the coming year!

We really wish you and your loved ones a safe and prosperous 2021!
